The territory running game, explained
Territory running turns the streets you run into a map you can own. Here is what it is, how Wibto plays, and why runners keep coming back.
What is a territory running game?
A territory running game is a running app that turns your real GPS route into land on a shared map. Instead of only logging distance and pace, every run claims part of your city. Other runners can claim it back, so the map changes every day — and you always have a reason to head out the door.
It sits somewhere between a run tracker like Strava and a location-based game like Pokémon GO: you still record a normal run, but the result is territory you can see, defend and lose.
How Wibto works
Wibto splits the real map into hexagons. Start a run and every hexagon your route passes through becomes yours and turns your colour. There is no need to run a closed loop — an out-and-back along your favourite street counts just as much.
- Run. Start a run anywhere in your city.
- Capture. Every hexagon you pass through becomes yours, live on the map.
- Defend. If another runner passes through one of your hexes, it becomes theirs. Run it again to win it back.
Every run also earns XP, so you level up and climb ranks all the way to Legend as your territory grows.
Hexagons vs loops: two ways to capture
Territory running apps capture land in two main ways. Loop-based apps give you the area inside a closed loop you run, which rewards big circuits. Hexagon-based apps like Wibto capture each cell your route touches, so every street you run counts — even a short run or a straight line.

Squads, duels and leaderboards
Leaderboards rank runners by captured territory — all time, monthly or among your friends. With Wibto Pro you can form a squad of up to five runners and paint the city in one colour, challenge any runner to a 1v1 duel over one, three or seven days, and compete in a seasonal Pro league.
Why runners love it
- A reason to run. Seeing someone take your street is a strong reason to lace up and take it back.
- Exploration. New streets mean new hexes, so you naturally discover parts of your city you have never run.
- Consistency. Territory only stays yours if you keep running it, which turns occasional runs into a habit.
- Friendly competition. Squads and duels make running social, even when you run alone.
Is Wibto free?
Yes. Wibto is free to download and play: run recording, hexagon capture, leaderboards, achievements and your profile are all included. Wibto Pro is an optional subscription that adds territory attack alerts, a route explorer, squads, 1v1 challenges, advanced analytics with a personal heatmap, GPX export and unlimited run history (the free tier keeps your last 20 runs).
